VISHAL BANSAL, MD, FACS

TRAUMA MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Vishal Bansal, MD is the current Director of Trauma Surgery at Scripps Healthcare and Mercy Hospital since 2015.  Previously, Dr. Bansal was an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University California San Diego.  Dr. Bansal is a clinically active trauma and general surgeon as well as a funded surgical-scientist focusing on the physiologic response to brain injury, injury causation and surgical outcomes.  He has been a principle investigator for three clinical trials in traumatic brain injury.  He has over 100 peer reviewed publications, book chapters and invited reviews, sits on three national trauma committees, is a referee for over 25 national and international scientific journals, and has been awarded the John H. Davis Scholarship from the American Association of Surgery for Trauma, the American Surgical Association Foundation Research Award, and awards from the Japanese Surgical Society and Neurotrauma Society. He is the inventor of ghrelin therapy in mild traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Bansal received his undergraduate degree in music from Kalamazoo College and his medical degree from Wayne State University where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha with high honors.  He completed his general surgery internship and residency at The University of Pittsburgh and his fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at University of California San Diego.

Kimberly Peck, MD

Kimberly Peck, MD is one of six full time trauma surgeons at Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego where she currently serves as the Medical Director of the Trauma Intensive Care Unit. She has a hospital-based clinical practice consisting primarily of trauma, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care. She is also an educator for interns and residents from Naval Medical Center San Diego and Kaiser. Locally she is a member of the Critical Care Committee and the Disaster Management Committee at Scripps Mercy San Diego. Nationally she is a member of multiple trauma societies and is an active member of Western Trauma Association.

Dr. Peck received her Bachelor of Science degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. She is board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She completed general surgery residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson which was followed by a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. She spent two years as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Arizona before joining the Scripps Mercy Trauma Team in 2007.

Seth Krosner, MD

Dr. Krosner joined Scripps Mercy Trauma Team in 1998. Dr. Krosner received his Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago. His residency was completed at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. He also trained at the Nuffield Department of Surgery at the University of Oxford. Dr. Krosner is Board Certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, and is a Certified Nutrition Support Physician.

Michael J. Krzyzaniak, MD, FACS

Dr. Krzyzaniak officially joined Scripps Mercy Trauma as a full time attending in 2024 and currently serves as the Trauma Director of Graduate Medical Education. He is also a Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon in the Navy Reserves and has been with the Scripps Mercy Trauma Team since 2016. He received his undergraduate degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, WI. He completed general surgery residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego along with a research fellowship at UC San Diego’s Trauma and Burn Research Program, and his fellowship in Trauma, Surgical Critical Care & Acute Care Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Upon returning to NMCSD as a staff surgeon, Dr. Krzyzaniak was appointed Research Director and served as the General Surgery Program Director for the Navy’s largest surgical training program from 2017-2023. He remains actively involved in research as principal investigator on various projects and as a mentor to residents completing their research fellowship.

Dr. Krzyzaniak has served as the Regimental Surgeon with the 4th Marines in Okinawa, Japan, as the Ship Surgeon on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), and as the Chief of Trauma for the NATO Role III Multinational Medical Unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Amelia J. Simpson, MD

Dr. Simpson graduated with honors from UCSD in 2006 with a B.S. in general biology.  She completed her M.D. at UCSD in 2010 and her general surgical training at University of Washington Seattle.  Dr. Simpson returned to UCSD for her surgical critical care fellowship and was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Surgery  where she attended on trauma, emergency and burn surgery.  She was recruited to Sharp Memorial where she continued as a trauma and acute care surgeon and finally joined the Scripps Mercy Trauma Team in 2022.  Dr. Simpson has special expertise in emergency and trauma surgery, critical care management, tissue reconstruction and skin grafting.

michael J. Sise, MD, FACS

Dr. Sise joined the organization as an attending trauma surgeon in 1987, was appointed Trauma Co-Director in 1992, and became Director in 1994. Dr. Sise attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1972, and attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and graduated in 1976.  He obtained his surgical training at the Naval Hospital, San Diego. He joined the staff of the Division of Vascular Surgery, Naval Hospital, San Diego in 1983, and served as the Chief of Vascular Surgery from 1985 to 1992. Dr. Sise has been dedicated to resident education as the Director of GME for trauma services for over twenty years.

Dr. Sise was Chief Surgeon aboard the U.S.S. Guam and U.S.S. Iwo Jima with the amphibious assault forces in the Persian Gulf during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991.

Jack Yang, MD

Dr. Yang hails from the San Francisco bay area. He is the current Chief of Vascular Surgery and past Chief of Surgery at Mercy hospital. He also co-chairs the professional practice review committee. His undergraduate studies were completed at UC Berkeley in 1982, followed by a Master’s degree in Public Health in 1986. He attended medical school at UC San Diego and continued on with a residency in general surgery and fellowship in surgical critical care. Dr. Yang joined the Mercy trauma service in 1997, then took a year off to complete a vascular surgery fellowship at the Scripps Clinic. His practice consists of trauma and emergency vascular surgery. Dr. Yang finds working with residents and students the most fulfilling aspect of his profession after direct patient care, and has felt honored to receive numerous teaching awards.

Erik Olson, MD

Erik Olson, MD is an active duty US Navy Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon and has been a member of the Scripps Mercy Trauma team since 2020. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He completed a research fellowship in clinical trauma research at Scripps Mercy Trauma Center and obtained his fellowship in Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Olson returned to NMSD as a staff surgeon where he has held positions of both Head of Acute Care Surgery and Assistant General Surgery Program Director. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Dr. Olson served as the Ship Surgeon on the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and as the AFRICOM Trauma Medical Director while deployed to the Expeditionary Medical Facility at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.

Matthew D. Tadlock, MD, FACS

Dr. Tadlock is an active duty US Navy Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon and has been with the Scripps Mercy Trauma Team since 2015. He received his undergraduate degree from Oregon State University and medical degree from Oregon Health & Science University. He completed his general surgery training at Naval Medical Center San Diego and his Surgical Critical Care & Trauma fellowship at University of Southern California-LA Medical Center. Dr. Tadlock has diverse leadership experience at various military hospitals including General Surgery Department Head, ICU Medical Director, Acute Care Surgery Division Head, Chief of the Medical Staff, and as ACGME Designated Institutional Officer.

Dr. Tadlock has 5 deployments providing Health Service Support to Navy, Marine Corps, and NATO units, including Flight Surgeon, USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75); Ship’s Surgeon, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70); Chief of Trauma, NATO Role III Multinational Medical Unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan,; Surgeon, Expeditionary Resuscitative Surgical System (ERSS), Pacific Team.

Steven R. Shackford, MD - Emeritus

Dr. Steven Shackford is past Chairman of the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, a post that he held for 18 years, and the former chief of trauma at The University of California San Diego. He has authored or co-authored 352 scientific papers, 29 book chapters and 3 monographs, mostly relating to secondary brain injury and the effect of hemorrhagic shock on the injured brain. He was funded by the NIH from 1988 through 1995. He is on the editorial board of several surgical journals and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Trauma. In addition to his interest in trauma he is an active vascular surgeon. Working with a number of other surgeons, Dr. Shackford helped to develop the ultrasound educational program for the American College of Surgeons. He was the first Chair of the National Ultrasound Faculty of the American College of Surgeons. He is a past President of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Western Trauma Association.  Dr. Shackford served as the Director of GME for the trauma services and is one of the five attending trauma surgeons and one of the three vascular surgeons at Scripps Mercy Hospital. He has been married to Ellen Dee Shackford for 40 years and has four children and 3 grandchildren.
